The village of St Fillans dates back to the 18th century when it was considered to be a small clachlan, known as Port of Lochearn, or Meikleport. It was later named St Fillans by Lord Gwydyr, the husband of Clementina Drummond, heiress to the Drummond Estate, in 1817.
This historic landmark was established in 1897 to line along the valley of Strathearn, connecting the Callendar and Oban line of the Caledonian Railway and Crieff. With the initial hopes of increasing tourism and transporting goods to and from the area, the line sadly closed in 1951.
The track remained in place and, thanks to the Loch Earn Railway Path Project, the section between Dalchonzie Halt and St Fillans now forms a section of a cycle route.
